Ruark, a well known author and joumalisl, spent many of his childhood summers in his grandparents's home. His book The Old Man and the Boy is a personal account of his boyhood years in Southport which included the advice of his grandfather, "Now, then, son,"the old man said "we ain't going to be talking any. Fishn' is a silent sport and alot of conversation scares the fish and wrecks the mood...' The house is currently the Robert Ruark Inn and is no longer owned by the Ruark family.
