What many people refer to as “Juniper berries” are not fruits at all, but the fleshy cones of a gymnosperm! Juniperus rigida is an evergreen conifer, related to red cedar, and is native to Northern China, Korea, and Japan. Our J. rigida specimen was added to this collection in 1941, making it one of our oldest plants. The conifer slope experienced years of neglect during the pressures of World War II, but this specimen flourished and remains today.
