Rocks from Another Dimension

Old man rock got carried along by his best friend, glacier.

Try to imagine these rocks as nature’s bouncy balls. They once were up in Canada, and the glacier brought them to Ithaca. These massive ice mountains acted like football players, dragging rocks to the end zone (which is Ithaca)!

These rocks weren’t always round. When they were up in Canada most were all jagged, but the glaciers smoothed them out . Some of the small rocks used to be big, but they got worn down by the glaciers. These strange rocks are called erratics. Today erratics are scattered throughout New York State.

Do you think dinosaurs are old? The rocks that became erratics were formed before dinosaurs, glaciers, and the first animal. Now imagine how old these rocks are! Imagine you are a rock, and you got moved by a glacier in the first ice age, turning into an erratic, nature’s bouncy ball.
