Here are two firs, Abies chinensis, and Abies holophylla, both originating in areas of China. You can find “friendly firs,” referring to the softness of their needless compared to spruce needles, which are often much less “friendly.” On one side of the path, you can feel that the firs are “friendly” while those on the other side are not. As you can see this phrase is helpful for many species, but it does not always apply. Can you decide which is “friendly?”
