In the 19th century, transportation by the horse and buggy was used as much as cars are used today. Back then people would complain about the struggle it would take for them to get into the carriage, therefore they invented the horse and buggy steps to make it easier for them to get up into the horse and buggy. Horse and carriage transportation was common from 1850-1910. You can find these steps, also known as carriage steps, all over downtown Madison.
