Mary Veronica Sweeney, affectionately known as “MV,” is a Hazleton native and teaching artist passionista. She earned an ​MFA ​from the ​Pennsylvania ​Academy ​of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, an MA in Filmmaking studying with painter/director David Lynch, and an Ed.M from the Harvard Graduate School of Education researching the arts, technology and innovation in learning. Sweeney is an adjunct professor of art at Luzerne County Community College where she has taught mural arts and foundation courses in studio painting. Always eager to champion the rich talent of this area, of both young and seasoned, MV enjoys teaching traditional art practices while directing multiple public art projects, such as, the five-banner, full-colored “Hazleton Way” mural to be installed on the new Hayden Family Arts Center. The public is invited to stop in and view samples of Sweeney's work, as well as contribute a few brush strokes to the Hazleton Way mural, currently in progress.

Sweeney’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and was featured in the 2006 traveling PA exhibition and book “Visions of the Susquehanna: 250 Years of Painting by American Masters”.
