Information

This monument honors ten Southport river pilots lost at sea. Five men were lost in 1872 and five more in 1877.

Other monuments honor Major General Robert Howe (1732 – 1786) who was a Continental Army general from the Province of North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. He also played a role in the colonial and state governments of North Carolina, serving in the legislative bodies of both.

Benjamin Smith (January 10, 1756 – January 26, 1826) was an aide to General Washington during the Revolution and later he served as the 16th governor of the state of North Carolina from 1810 to 1811.
