The Ohio River streams westward and is the largest tributary to the Mississippi River. It has been one of the major modes of transportation for people and products to the Madison, IN region since 1809 when Madison was platted. This river is 981.1 miles in length and the widest part of the river is over 1 mile. The river offers plenty of opportunities including fishing, sailing, boating, and water skiing. The Ohio has also been responsible for many floods throughout the decades, most notably is the 1937 Flood that wiped out Madison's busy riverfront, reaching above First Street for the only time in the 20th century. Recently, during the winter of 2018, the river breached flood stages once again almost reaching first street, damaging many homes and streetscapes as seen in the attached YouTube drone video.
