True Cedars: The Cedar of Lebanon

Point of Interest Details

“Cedar” is a general term used to describe many types of evergreen conifers, such as Eastern red cedar and Atlantic whitecedar; however, the “true cedar” is of the Cedrus genus (Pinaceae family), native to the Himalayas, Lebanon, Turkey, and the Mediterranean. In addition to misleading names, Cedrus cones are quite similar to those of a fir while the needle branching pattern is identical to a larch, contributing to why plants are often misidentified and misnamed.
