Kendel Joseph (aka Lucidtraveler) is a Rhode Island-based artist whose work in portraiture has become a well-known feature in the Providence community. In this residency, Kendel focused his work on five faces of local artists, creators and leaders using translucency, light and the mirrored reflection of self. He explores these portraits using spraypaint and works free-hand without projection, grids or other orienting strategies.

From the artist:

“I chose these five local artists because I wanted to highlight inspirational artists and people of color who have made immense strides to build Providences art community. I think it is extremely important to show the cultural diversity in Providence, and I believe that representation matters within our community. “

Shey ‘Ri Acu’ Rivera Rios

~TAKE A CLOSER LOOK~

Look closely at the artist’s technique: What do you notice about the way he represents the hair on a few of the faces?

What do you notice about the way the work shows up against the dark background?

Looking at the collection of work together, how does the way the artist fills the individual spaces with the portraits make a difference to the collection overall?
