St. Edward's

To us, St. Edward’s has been the place we call home for four years. As we approach the end of our time here we want to reflect on how the campus has changed during our stay, but also over time. We believe that St. Edward’s is a historical landmark. The doors to this institution first opened in 1877 in Austin, Texas. To begin, it was an all-boys high school and it eventually became a private, Catholic university. It wasn’t until 1966 that women were allowed to attend. If you think about it, that’s not very long ago. Now, we sit in a classroom that is predominantly women! All St. Edward’s students are given a tour at the beginning of their freshman year when it’s all exciting and new. We learn about the ghosts, traditions, and history of the campus. For the first year you might still appreciate the beautiful architecture, but soon it just becomes part of your everyday life. When we see change happen we may think about how annoying and inconvenient the construction is, although the change is meant to benefit us or future students! We are creating this tour so that we may again appreciate our beautiful campus and see how much things have changed over the years. This is our way to say thank-you, and good-bye to a place that helped us grow into the people we are today. On this tour you will see familiar places and symbols and get to know these landmarks better. We may even surprise you with places you didn’t know were on our campus. Our hope is that there are some things that you will learn for the first time today and that it will motivate you to get to know our campus better.
