Information

In the same garden as the Nixon Monument is the unmissable bronze statue of a mounted soldier. This monument of a New Zealand Mounted Rifleman was unveiled by Governor-General Sir Charles Fergusson during the ANZAC memorial service in 1928 and commemorates those who died in the First World War. The war had concluded a decade prior to the unveiling and the loss of these soldiers was still felt by people in the community. The statue reportedly cost around £2,000 and was donated by a local resident, Alfred Trenwith, who was thanked by the mayor for his generosity during the ceremony. Trenwith had initially hoped to make the donation anonymously, but the secret of his identity was apparently leaked during the statue’s construction in England. The monument still stands as a reminder of the community’s losses in the Great War.

A small information board about the garden can also be found next to this statue, giving extra information about the three monuments in this garden.

On the other side of this statue is the third monument; a smaller sundial on a slightly raised platform.
