Capturing Personality and Bringing Feeling to Life. Everything in Catherine Hafer's pieces, from composition, pose, color choices, placement of the subject, to technique is specifically selected to capture a feeling and/or personality. In order to do that, she has to dig deep below the surface and go beyond what is seen on the outside.
The inspiration for her work begins with a feeling that stirred inside the artist. She then accesses insights into what she is feeling. Often, what she sees with her physical eye, is just a vehicle for evoking the feeling. In other words, what she is seeing is not what she will actually paint; the feeling from what she is seeing is what needs to be put to canvas.
Hafer uses some of these same insights and techniques when creating portraits of people and animals. Her goal is to bring out who/what the subject is on the inside, enabling her to paint who they really are, not just their outer shell.
