Virginia Keating considers herself an "Outsider" artist since she is completely self-taught. Her goal is to make art from as many different media as possible. She had previously chosen natural foraged elements such as driftwood, stone, and shells but has recently begun expanding, using repurposed ceramics, recycled glass and man-made items found on the beach.
She grew up in Touisset Point in Warren, RI directly on Mount Hope Bay with a beach as her back yard. She has never lost the wonder and joy of feeling sand and shells in her hands as she sits on a rock warmed by the sun. She finds her times in nature particularly invigorating now, and feels these sojourns are particularly helpful as in her daily trials with her early diagnosis of dementia. Virginia jokingly says she keeps her hair blonde so no one will suspect!
She is pursuing her passion of teaching children to go out in nature, collect, enjoy, forage and then return to the studio to art, hoping to begin these sessions with a local grant in 2023.
She has only been an artist a short time, but has sold in local galleries and was named one of the Southcoast's Top Ten Most Unique Artists in 2021 by the Southcoast Almanac.
She is looking forward to returning to the tour with the addition of mixed media mosaics and larger outdoor sculptures highlighting stone, wood, glass and metal and hopes to see you soon
Virginia is lucky to have relocated to 26 Pauline Street in Westport where her son has welcomed her into his home. He has provided her with three workshop and display areas, and she has a beautiful view of the South Watuppa Pond from each space!
