Gretchen work's in a variety of styles and mediums, inspired by animals, specifically horses, as well as nature. She has run a business creating photo realistic pet portrait commissions in oil and graphite over the past 20 plus years. As of recent, she has been exploring more and more of her own work trying to abstract the equine form in paint, color and technique but inspired by the horse itself. Their energy, power, fragility, spirit, and beauty. Her technique is developed from many years of painting them and a lifetime of riding them. She feels very connected to the horse and animals in general and has a deep understanding of their personalities when in work and also free in the field. The proportions of the animal are very important to her style, they need to look correct while at the same time she tries to paint them in a more abstract expressionistic style. She describes it as sculpting their form with paint and color, creating depth on a 2D surface.
While horses have always been her passion in art and life, she has the same adoration for nature. Her goal has been to take her same interest in abstract expressionism and apply it to landscapes, seascapes and the mountains in particular. Nature's colors are like no other and add to the dimension in this body of work. While more painterly than abstract, she is constantly challenging herself to focus more on colors, shapes and negative space and less on realism.
