Joanne has loved everything about the sea and its shore since she was a young girl collecting shells, rocks, and glass on trips to the beach every summer, something she still enjoys doing today. She came across her first Sailor's Valentine while browsing at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Intrigued by their raw beauty and history, she began researching and discovered modern-day artists filling beautiful octagon shaped boxes with unique shell designs meticulously arranged from thousands of seashells, urchins, and corals that she collects and purchases from around the world. When creating her Sailor's Valentines, Joanne carefully sorts her chosen seashells according to size, shape and color and carefully places them one at a time in a specially made wooden box. Boxes are made from a variety of wood with her favorite being tiger maple. Each unique Sailor's Valentine takes up to six months to complete. Finished works range from six to fifteen inches in diameter.

Joanne's other works include bead and shell embroidered wall hangings and custom bead embroidered jewelry.

Joanne will be demonstrating her process of the intricate art of creating Sailor's Valentines and bead embroidered shell art.
