The Living Classroom: Invasive to Native

Nestled at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, this garden is a masterful blend of beauty and ecological function. Designed by a master gardener, it showcases a vibrant array of native plants that create a lively habitat for pollinators. Visitors are greeted by an educational landscape that highlights the impact of gardening choices; contrasting invasive species like English ivy, Periwinkle, and Japanese barberry with beautiful native alternatives such as Prairie Smoke and Bearberry, or kinnikinnik as the First Nations call it.

The garden features a diverse selection of native flora, including a Tulip tree, Button bushes, New Jersey Tea, Fothergilla, Butterfly milkweed, and more. Sustainable landscaping practices are evident in the use of arborist mulch wood chips. Small bee bowls are located throughout the gardens to provide water for them.

As you explore, don’t forget to look up! Red-tailed Hawks and Bald Eagles often soar overhead, adding to the garden's wild charm. This thoughtfully curated space inspires visitors to add native plants in their own gardens, fostering beauty while supporting local ecosystems.
