Paper Montage (updated terminology for collage) has been Galen's medium for the past 11 years. It is an extremely time consuming process of which an 8 x 10 can take upwards of 60 hours to complete. She cuts and tears handmade papers, rice paper and imported fine papers to first layer the backgrounds of each piece with color. If she doesn't have the exact color paper she wants, she makes the color by gluing one color of paper over the other, creating the perfect hue in her minds eye, with a depth of transparency she's not seen with other mediums. She then use high quality, opaque and textural magazine pieces, each individually cut, to layer the subject (a bird or flower for example) on top of the background. She has found this gives a good sense of depth within the painting. The larger pieces, such as commissions and land/seascapes, can take months to complete; however, she does enjoy the larger format to achieve the perspectives needed to make the work feel as if one is standing right there. Many people think she uses paint to enhance her pieces, but, it is only paper and glue, or Paper Montage: 'Painting with Paper".
Galen has given many demonstrations over the years. She loves to interact with the people who ask questions and watch her process in person. The layering of the papers is always the high point, as people see just how intense this process is! Over the past 13 years of the SCA Open Studio, she has always had ongoing 'demos' to both explain the layering process and why it takes so many hours to complete. The question usually gets asked: "Do you make your own paper", the answer is always a resounding "No! The process is lengthy enough!"
The studio of gvsart is in the back of the main house, set back off the road. There will be signs directing you where to park. Please follow them!
