Gretchen's work has been inspired by the equine form and nature’s beauty for the past 30 years.
Having been influenced by some of the most well-known Abstract Expressionist painters she continues to push her own paintings of the horse and landscapes in this direction. Her love of vibrant, rich colors is evident in both subjects of her work. Ever evolving, she is excited with the process and enjoys the challenges with each new work she begins and the journey it takes her on never knowing exactly how each piece will be end up.
Motivated by her time outdoors with horses and her dogs she is in awe of the dramatic combinations of colors and light that make up our natural surroundings. It’s mother nature’s drama that she attempts to encapsulate in her landscapes through her use of color, texture and minimal form.
She has studied the equine form assiduously most of her life, from the saddle as well as the pasture and paddock. She has made a name for herself through commissions of horses and dogs with heightened realism and detail in oil and pencil.
However, it's that connection to horses, that deep integrated part of her soul that continually inspires her work on a daily basis. The sheer size, energy, power, heart and deep soulful spirit of the horse, her muse, is what captivates her as an artist. She expresses this pure physical prowess and individual essence through strong lines, energetic brush strokes and color indicative of what they express in the ring or field. Her focus is to produce life size paintings expressing the sport horse’s heart and soul.
Studio Space is located in the garage on the side of the house.
