30 Seventh Street, William H. Allen, 1831, Greek Revival Style

This brick structure replaced a wood frame house destroyed by fire. This Greek Revival style residence has a highly decorated front entry with Corinthian columns on the portico. William Allen, the son of a Quaker, began his career as a tailor working with his father, James and brother, Gideon which led to their outfitting sailors in the whaling industry. William and Gideon Allen owned shares in the whaling ships Octavia, Brahmin, Coral, Victory and Francis 2.
