Dot Bergen is an abstract encaustic artist who explores motion and change. Nature profoundly influences her work. Dot leverages her advanced degrees in Biology to inform her explorations of scale. “I have always been fascinated by scale and how an entity viewed microscopically can be interpreted on a macroscopic scale, and vice versa. For example, a bed of moss can resemble a forest, just as river flow can be interpreted as cellular movements. How we interpret these constructs depends upon our perspective.”
Encaustics is the art of painting with molten, tempered beeswax. This is a highly versatile medium that lends itself to establishing depth, translucency and texture. Fusing the painted beeswax into many layers and then sculpting the wax allows the resultant surface to be as smooth as glass, as richly textured as a head of broccoli, or both. The surface structure allows for three dimensionality, implied (in the case of a smooth surface) due to color translucency and layering, or actual (in the case of a heavily accreted surface) due to purposeful and directional build-up of wax.
The translucency of the layered wax allows color from the deeper layers to be reflected up to the surface giving the viewer the sense that the piece is lit from within. Dot uses depth as a metaphor for the passage of time, suggestive of weathering or erosion, and imparts the question of ‘what came before’. In other examples, she uses surface texture to imply fluidity and directional movements, which can result from a variety of factors including currents, wind and sunlight. The natural world is a rich source for ideas of motion and change at all scales imaginable.
The studio is behind the main house.

Dan Connolly’s photography is an elemental distillation that conveys the energy of a subject or scene in a fresh way. Deflecting the mind's tendency to dwell on the concrete, his images embrace the spirit of a subject or location and encourage an emotional or metaphorical response. Using color, shape, and line as gateways to provoke, his photographs are emblems of locale and meaning.
His work incorporates techniques of Abstract Expressionism, incorporating elements that call to mind Action Painting and Color Field work. The spontaneity and energy of his photographs urges the viewer to let their minds wander and their emotions come to the fore. Unlike traditional photography, the color, shape, and line of these images dominate and command center stage.
He is exploring alternate display methods in order to release photographs from behind the glass. Metal, canvas, encaustic, and sealers allow the viewer unfettered access to the work.
