So when I get ready to paint on canvas I select a heavy duty professional grade gallery wrapped canvas. First thing I do is inspect canvas for any imperfections. Before I get started I put a few coats of gesso and sand between coats. It dries hard and makes the surface more stiff. Without Gesso the paint would soak right into the canvas. So if I'm working on a seascape and there is a sunset scenery planned I do a undercoat. On this painting I mix some Quinacridone Red and some Pyrrole Orange on the palette. I'll spray some water on the canvas and spread the under coat of paint. Acrylic paint dries pretty quick. Next I measure 3/4 the way up on canvas with a charcoal pencil. Use the T-square and draw a line across at that point. I attach a good painters tape across canvas at line. Now I'm ready for the sky. I have a Manganese Blue and Titanium White. I wet a 1-1/2" brush with flow aid additive added to the water. Make a pass with the color Manganese blue . Then I start mixing Titanium white a little at the time until I reach the tape line blending them all in together. Clouds next using a fan brush or sponge. Sometimes I use the bottom of a bigger brush. I prefer the fan brush. With Titanium spin brush and move forward. Add grays . Take a dry brush and move things around. Go back and brighten edges. When everything is dry remove the tape. This is just about the sky.

Ok if the weather is nice for the Tour I will set up my demo outside. I will show what canvas I use, Talk about the gesso, Types of paint I use, How I use them And about the procedures as I paint.

I move my paintings downstairs for the open studio Tour. A bigger room to move around. Set up a canopy outside with table to sit down with refreshments. Follow signs at the corner of Briggs and Rt. 88 or Sanford Road and Briggs leading to 21 Raymond Street in Westport, MA. 02790. Signs lead right up to my Driveway right side of Raymond St.
