420 Christmas Tree Drive / Herbert Knudsen House / Architect: Charles Haertling / Style: Frank Lloyd Wright ‘Usonian’ / built 1959
This is another design in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was created by the brilliant architect Charles Haertling for doctor Herbert Knudsen and his family, and completed in 1959. The Knudsen house has a symmetrical composition of angular shapes. The overhanging rooms of the 2nd level pivot on either side of a central brick chimney tower. The design takes advantage of its sloping site with the garage below and the living areas above. The roofs have unusually deep overhangs shading the large area of south-facing windows that wrap around corners. Inside the ceilings are vaulted with angular patterns.
