This well preserved structure is a classic example of Federal Style architecture. Built in 1815, this has served as everything from a personal residence to the county jail. It is currently home to The Allison Law Firm.
A Federal style house was popular in the United States during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly during the Federalist era. These houses are characterized by their symmetrical facade, typically featuring a centered front door flanked by evenly spaced windows on either side. The exterior often incorporates elements such as brick or stone construction, simple geometric shapes, and minimal ornamentation.
Federal style houses typically have a balanced and dignified appearance, with a low-pitched roof and rectangular shape. The facade may include decorative details such as fanlights, sidelights, and classical motifs like columns or pilasters. Inside, Federal style houses often have a central hallway with rooms arranged symmetrically on either side.
Overall, Federal style houses exude a sense of elegance, order, and refinement, reflecting the architectural tastes of the early American republic. They remain iconic examples of classical American architecture.
