550 College Avenue / Wilson - Haertling House / Architect: Charles Haertling / Style: Expressionism / built 1968
The Wilson residence of 1968 was designed by Charles Haertling for a university professor and his artist wife. They wanted a library for research, a space for weaving (done in the balcony above the living room), for pottery (a kiln outdoors), and painting. Two years after the Wilson’s moved in there was an arson fire. They sold the house to Charles and Viola Haertling who restored and improved it. The house has a triangular plan with three ‘pavilions’ of living space. It has 2 floors plus a bedroom loft. The exterior is sculpturally shaped with roof forms almost like mushroom caps, sided in wood shakes. This house was designated a landmark property in 2011.
