Torchworker, Melynda Schudrich, has using been glass as a medium for 15 years, beginning with fused glass. She learned the art of using a torch that heats the borosilicate glass to about 2400 degrees to shape into marbles, small vessels, animals, and colorful flowers. Lately, she has been focusing on small sculptures like mushrooms and turtles, creating a realistic likeness in the glass.
New to her repertoire is sandblasting. Melynda has been creating unique designs on wine glasses, vases and bowls. Her favorite is blasting wine bottles for newly married couples. The bottles are first slumped (melted) in the kiln, then Melynda creates a personal message to be sandblasted on for the new couple.
Melynda is always open to learning new technique. She has learned mostly from her teachers in a family camp in Vermont, but more recently taking classes at the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, New York.
Melynda enjoys teaching others what she has learned. She is currently working with school age students on a themed personalized sandblasting project.
Melynda will be demonstrating glasswork on her torch. She will be creating implosion flowers and marbles in a variety of color and sizes. Melynda will also be demonstrating basic sandblasting. These demonstrations will take place on Sunday at her studio.
