705 Willowbrook Drive / Lynn & Arlene Wolfe House / Architect: Hobart Wagener with addition by Tician Papachristou / Style: Frank Lloyd Wright ‘Usonian’ / built 1957 with addition in the early 1960’s
This house is not very visible from the public right of way except in winter when tree leaves are absent. We wanted to include it on the tour because it is a great design by two of Boulder’s best architects. Hobart Wagener designed this modern home in 1957 for Lynn Wolfe, an art professor and his wife Arlene. They were instrumental in founding PLAN Boulder in 1951 which spearheaded the Open Space program here. The design is reminiscent of the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright with low sloping roofs with big overhangs, the use of natural wood siding, and exposed ceiling rafters inside and out. The house was placed up above Gregory Creek with a bridge crossing it. A roof-covered balcony runs the entire length of the house facing the creek. The Wright-inspired addition by architect Tician Papachristou steps up the hillside. The main living space is 2-stories tall with a modernist concrete fireplace anchoring it.
