760 Flagstaff Road / Dr. Kenneth Kahn House / Architect: Charles Haertling / Style: Expressionist / built 1968
The access to this house is on a tight and busy road so we suggest you observe it from Circle Drive below. Here is a description in the architect’s own words: "A house for a doctor's family of wife, boy and girl, off of a mountain road - the site has a commanding view of the surroundings. The steep slope, the need for large usable flat areas, and the desire to take maximum advantage of views directed the design. The problem suggested the forward location of the structure connecting to the ground and gave rise to the additional catapult of the cantilever."
This Charles Haertling-designed home appears to just have landed from outer space! The building is made up of three interconnected pyramidal volumes. Two of them hug the road while the third launces itself over the steep hillside in a dramatic cantilever. The living room pavilion seems to defy gravity. The exterior of the building has a uniform white stucco finish which accentuates the spaceship-like forms.
