780 Flagstaff Road / Jorgensen House / Architect: Charles Haertling / Style: Brutalist / built in 1969
Next door to the Kahn house, access to this building is on a tight and busy road so we suggest you observe it from Circle Drive below. This is one of the most spectacular MCM houses in all of Colorado. Architect Charles Haertling designed this home for a mayor of Boulder, Linda Jorgensen, and her family. The house is suspended on four cylindrical towers reminiscent of grain silos, with each tower containing functions of the home. These include a double-sided fireplace, a spiral staircase, a bathroom, an office, space for utilities and storage. The center of the house is a two-story open space with different rooms extending from it. There are three wings of rooms cantilevered from the towers. The top floor has a library, an office, and an outdoor patio with expansive views. The exterior of the cantilevered building blocks is sheathed in copper, which has aged to a beautiful patina. The towers are concrete that is painted white. It is a stunningly innovative design.
