Information

819 6th Street / Sylvester Labrot House / Architect: Hobart Wagener (Addition by architect Cheri Belz) / Style: Expressionist / built 1954 with a large addition in 2007.

Syl Labrot and his young family moved into his Hobart Wagener-designed modern home in 1954 — the same year that his photography career took off. By 1958 he sold the house to move to the New York City area. The home is a prime example of MCM design. The roof beam structure is exposed in both the interior and exterior ceilings. It has an extensive amount of glass to extend the indoor space to the out-of-doors. The floor plan is laid out as a series of rectangular ‘pavilions’, linked at the corners and capped by upwardly sloping, ‘butterfly roofs’. The exterior walls are panelized brick with horizontal bands of windows above. These brick walls extend out into the landscape. In 2007 architect Cheri Belz completed a large addition done in the same style as the original. In 2008 she landmarked the house.
