In 1857, Adam Hickman, an early Abingdon businessman who was in the tannery business making saddles and harnesses, built the four-story Greek Revival style white frame house on this site. At the rear of the property (accessible via Whites Alley) is the cave from which, according to legend, a pack of wolves emerged and attacked Daniel Boone and his dogs in 1760.
