Steps to find the adaptive services website :

  1. Open up your internet browser and go to www.google.com
  2. Type in fgcu.edu and click on the first link that pops up
  3. Once you’re on the FGCU website you will go to the search icon in the upper right hand corner and type in “Adaptive Services”
  4. Select the first link that pops up in the results
  5. After you’ve done that it will take you straight to a page with all of their information including their website and telephone numbers

What They Do:

The Adaptive Services Office aims to enhance access to students, staff, and family with disabilities by providing reasonable accommodations. This helps educate the campus/community whilst also promoting equal access and opportunity.

Policy:

FGCU promotes diversity and knows how important it is to provide services and accommodations to individuals who have disabilities. Individuals with a documented disability will be provided accommodations that will supplement their learning styles, and help them in becoming academically, professionally, and personally successful. Adaptive Services advocates for guiding each individual receiving assistance to become more independent and successful learners.

Rights and Responsibilities: The Office of Adaptive Services reserves a number of rights, to deny accommodations for valid reason and to request documentation as proof of any disability.

Individual Responsibility; The individual must provide proper documentation for evidence of disability, and is responsible for working with the Office. In order to register with the Office of Adaptive Services, the individual must make an appointment for initial consultation with a case manager and provide proper documentation. After initial appointment and discussion, it is recommended that the individual meet with their case manager at the beginning of each new semester.

Responsibilities of the Office: It is the responsibility of the Office to supply and aid the individual as quickly and effectively as possible within the given parameters. The Office is to always act upon an issue to the best of their ability, and always practice confidentiality with the individual’s case and records.

Accommodation Definition: An accommodation is defined by the Office of Adaptive Services as a provided service or piece of equipment that aids a student in achieving their academic goals. Accommodations that lower academic standard, threaten a student or faculty member, or fiscally burden the university are prohibited and will not be provided.

Accommodations Provided: Accommodations provided by the Office range greatly to aid a wide variety of disabilities. Aids are available to offer services such as note taking, tutoring, interpretation and more. Altered teaching is available, such as extended time for tests and course substitution. Technological accommodations are also available in the form of speech text programs, specialized calculators, and audiobooks. University ADA Committee:The ADA Advisory Committee at Florida Gulf Coast University is a representation of staff, faculty, and students, and its purpose is to advise the University Administration on matters of accessibility and accommodations related to people with disabilities. Areas evaluated by the Committee include, campus design, construction, policies, procedures, training, and disability awareness.
