African Lions are the only big cat to live in family groups called prides. These prides can have up to three males and dozen females. The females are usually all related because they stay with the pride while the male cubs leave once they reach maturity. The male lion’s mane is not only used to attract a mate, but acts as neck protection when fighting with other male lions. Lionesses are responsible for most hunting, staying in the same area for several days after a successful hunt before roaming to find their next meal.
