The Aldabra Giant Tortoise can be found both individually and in herds. They’re one of the more social tortoise species. In the past, at least 18 giant tortoise species lived throughout the islands of the western Indian Ocean. But over-exploitation made many of these species extinct by 1840. Only the Aldabra Giant Tortoise remains. Living in the grasslands, swamps, and coastal dunes of the Aldabra Atoll, these tortoises are the largest animal in their environment. They can live for over 100 years and can grow up to 4 feet long.
