The Armoury or Combat Support Building provided protected accomodation against conventional, biological or chemical attack for about 100 military military personnel who could immediately be available to defend the base. The colloquial name "Armoury" reflects the fact that weaponry would also have been stored there.
The nearby sculpture, called Changes, celebrates the transformation of the old RAF base and American nuclear missile base to a business park and nature reserve.
The sculpture uses recycled materials from the old airfield, once the longest runway in Europe.
The Icelandic artist Gudrun Nielsen, who designed the sculpture, said the artwork symbolises the area's history.
