Building 33 & 08
The left-hand building, with its double garage doors originally served as the firehouse for the fort. Fire was a constant threat in place full of ammunition and wooden buildings. Notice the distinct tower in the back left corner. This was used to hang dry the fire hoses and is a feature of most firehouses.
The larger building at right was the forts bakery. Fresh bread & pastries were baked here daily for the men in the barracks. The bakers Lady Fingers were storied to be particularly delightful. Imagine the aroma of fresh bread drifting from the bakery, carried by the morning breeze. The bakery later served as the forts Post Exchange, offering everything from chewing gum to cirarettes and beer.
For a shorter tour skip the gun batteries and continue left.
