Ban Mai Mok Cham village

Tambon Tha Ton, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50280, Thailand

Weaving is a millenia-old everyday work activity and source of income for many women in this area, particularly among hill-tribe communities such as the Akha, Shan, Lahu, Musa, Karen and others. In the past, and due to their isolated location and political marginalisation many tribes people became involved in the ‘golden triangle’ drug trade which damaged their community life. The weaving ladies of Ban Mai represent one of many successful projects initiated by the Thai Royal Project Foundation which helped ethnic community members to use their unique heritage in mountain farming and handicrafts to overcome exploitation by the drug trade.

Our video: Watch Hom, the happy weaving lady demonstrating how to create a Tai Lu style pattern.
