Opening as the People's Bank of Halifax, in 1872, it later merged with the Bank of Montreal, in 1905.
When the bank first opened, it was located in the home of its first manager, John W. Barss.
The building you see here today, was build in 1922. If you look to the top of the building, you can see the Bank’s coat of arms is there today, along with the original pillars. Unfortunately, the lovely transom (the window above the doorway) was filled in with corporate identification, sometime in the 1990s. It also no longer features the original wooden doors.
