There was already a thriving Methodist Episcopal Congregation here in 1882 when George Washington Dugger (Image 2) deeded 2 acres of land to the trustees of the church for the purposes of a church and a cemetery. A simple wooden church was soon constructed in the approximate area of the existing church. In 1887, Mr. L.M. (Lute) Banner (Image 3) offered to purchase the church building and move it further down the road for use as a store and then build the congregation a new church on the original site. The exchange was executed and the original building can be seen later in the tour. The present structure, completed in 2000, replaced that second church building and received an architectural award from the State of North Carolina. Adjacent to the Methodist church is the Historic Banner Elk Cemetery (Image 4). Continue on the brick sidewalk up the hill to view the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church. Note the gate to the Historic Banner Elk Cemetery between the two churches.
