In the meadow, you will see nesting boxes built to attract the Eastern Bluebird. Bluebirds are of the thrush family with blue backs and wings with a reddish breast. Bluebirds are native song birds who eat insects, seeds and berries and nest in cavities, like holes in trees. Their numbers have declined due to loss of habitat but also because invasive species like the English House Sparrow and Starlings have crowded them out of their nesting sites. Bluebirds like parklands and these boxes have been situated in their preferred habitat, open areas with a few trees (Connecticut Department of Energy Environmental Protection, 2018). You notice that the boxes don’t have any perches. That’s because Bluebirds don’t need them but the lack of perches discourages both predators and competitors making the house a little safer for the Bluebirds (Song Bird Garden, 2018).
