As you make a slight bend to the left, you are entering a wooded area where you will often see small birds perching on a branch or getting a drink in any little puddles in the path. The bright blue bird with white underside and wings and tail streaked with black is the Blue Jay. Blue jays are omnivorous and will eat not only nuts and seeds but also insects, mice, and frogs and have been known to make a shrieking squawk (Ohio DNR, 2012c) . As with many birds species, the population of Blue Jays is under pressure. If you would like to help out Blue Jays, consider planting oak trees in your yard, put out a bird feeder with peanuts and sunflower seeds and keep your cat indoors (Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 2017).
