This is another example of a marble. This marble also has the dark streaks running through it. Marble starts out its life as a sedimentary rock called limestone. Limestone, which is also made of calcite crystals, commonly forms in warm, shallow tropical seas. There is a large marble quarry north of Baltimore which is still active today.
If you look at this marker closely, you can see the individual calcite crystals. They are smaller than the crystals in the pink marble at Stop 17. You can also feel them if you run your hand across the marker face.
