There are still remnants of the Saints arrival in Yerba Buena/San Francisco in 1846. Before it was annexed by Oakland in 1872, the area now called East Oakland was formerly an independent town called Brooklyn, named after the ship that brought the Mormon settlers to the Bay. The Brooklyn name is still around, including here, Brooklyn Avenue, which runs from Lake Merritt to Park Boulevard.
