Created By: Auckland Council
Erected soon after the turn of the twentieth century, the Browns Bay wharf eased the landing of goods and passengers, particularly at high tide. However, the larger steamships that plied the route from Auckland during the summer holidays were too large to dock when the tide was low. This meant that passengers were frequently brought closer to the shore in rowboats, with male passengers expected to roll up their trousers and carry the women ashore.
In 1936 the coast was lashed by a severe storm and the Browns Bay wharf was severely damaged. By this stage, land transport had improved significantly, and the county council elected to demolish the wharf.
Return to Bayview Avenue and then turn left along Beach Front Lane.
