Historic Albany’s Brueggeman home boasts an interesting history. Originally located near the Wolverine Tube, the house was moved on log rollers pulled by mules down Sherman Street to its present location at 614 Sherman St. Built between 1897-99, the home served as a company home for employees of industries located in the vicinity of Wolverine and other area industries. The house was one of approximately 20 homes moved to various locations in New Decatur (Albany) to allow for industrial expansion.
After passing through fourteen families, the home is now in the care of Brueggeman’s who purchased her in 2005. This updated, two-story former “row” house features a wrap porch, a renovated/relocated kitchen, breakfast room, and modernized bathrooms. The original wood floors and windows maintain the home’s historic flavor with only a floor plan slightly modified from its original footprint. An exquisite rose garden, gazebo, and a brick foot path provide a center focal area in the rear yard along with additional lush green areas. The former garage has been modernized, converted to a small cottage with a historical model railroad layout: “Nickel Plate Road” now part of the Norfolk Southern Railway.
The Bud and Charlene love living in the Albany Historical District with its great old houses, modern conveniences, neighborhood sidewalks, beautiful front porches, and wonderful neighbors. They are currently working with Judge David Breland to have their home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tour attendees will be greeted by Jolly Ole Saint Nicolas himself at the Brueggeman House this year.
