Cuba Mall has been a centre for left-wing dissent and organising over the last century. In addition to the Street’s numerous bookshops and party rooms, the street itself has been a place to proselytise, pamphleteer, and proclaim.
This photo shows two members of the Socialist Action League leafletting Friday night shoppers to promote a July 1970 mobilisation against the Vietnam War. Shop hours have changed and Friday night shopping no longer has the social centrality it once did, but leafleting remains an everyday part of left-wing campaigning life.
