Exploration of the Spit by Europeans in 1788 was led by Captain Arthur Philip, commander of the First Fleet and eventual first governor of the Colony of New South Wales.[1] In Spit West Reserve, a memorial stands, created in October 1988 to commemorate the two-hundred-year anniversary of Phillip’s exploration. It is constructed from a display of bricks from Vernals Farm in Hampshire, England, where Phillip lived before venturing to Australia. It can be found by venturing down the path to the left of the rowing sheds.
