Battle of Okolona Tour-Begin at Carnegie Library, 321 West Main Street
Okolona has the charm and pace of a small Mississippi town with a rich history. The surrounding prairie remains unspoiled In town, the streets are lined with antebellum and Victorian structures. Thanks to the Friends of the Battle of Okolona, Inc., a great deal remains to be seen from the Battle of Okolona. The traveling distances are short, and the traffic moves smoothly. A leisurely tour offers great historical rewards.
The tour is in three parts. The first covers downtown Okolona, the second covers Smith's retreat and Forrest's pursuit and the third is an excursion from Okolona to Egypt, West Point, Columbus and back.
The starting point for the first two parts is the Okolona Carnegie Library at 321 West Main Street. Since it opened in 1915, the library has amassed a large collection of sources for local history, including the Battle of Okolona. Mrs. Estelle Ivy, the head librarian, will be happy to show visitors the Heritage Room and to answer questions.
This point of interest is part of the tour: Battle of Okolona
