The ingenuity of founder Robert S. Abbott led the Chicago Defender to achieve national distribution through the Pullman rail porters. It became a leading source of information for Black audiences from Chicago to the South, spurring the Great Northern Migration.
After 116 years it remains an important publication for reporting on issues. In 2019, the paper started a new chapter, ceasing it’s printed newspaper publication to continue as a digital-focused content platform.
