Chimpanzees are distinguished by their prominent ears, protrusive lips, and arms that are longer than their legs. They also don’t have tails. Chimps can live in groups of up to 125 individuals, but on average live in groups of 15-40. These groups have a social hierarchy, led by an alpha male. Young chimpanzees ride on their mother’s back for about three years until they are weaned. Chimpanzees use facial expressions and calls to communicate with each other.
